Takahiro (Takashi) Toritani (鳥谷 敬) was a Hanshin Tigers legend—an elite infielder celebrated for smooth defense, sharp instincts, and calm leadership. He made his debut in 2004 and became a long-time cornerstone of the Tigers, admired for dependable play at shortstop and a steady, winning approach that made him a fan favorite at Koshien Stadium.
He also represented Samurai Japan at the 2013 World Baseball Classic, helping the team earn a bronze medal. Toritani is especially remembered for his game-changing poise under pressure—most notably drawing a key late walk and then **stealing second with two outs in the ninth against Chinese Taipei, a daring play that set up the tying run and sparked Japan’s dramatic comeback.
