Daihatsu is a Japanese automaker that is best known for its small cars and kei cars. However, Daihatsu has also had a long and successful history in racing. Daihatsu first entered motorsport in the 1960s, quickly establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with. In 1967, Daihatsu won the Japanese Grand Prix with its P500 racer.

In the 1970s, Daihatsu began to focus on rally racing. The company developed a number of successful rally cars, including the Charmant and the Taft. Daihatsu won the Japanese Rally Championship in 1977 and 1978.

In the 1980s, Daihatsu expanded its motorsport activities to include sports car racing. The company developed the Charade GT-ti, which competed in the World Touring Car Championship. Daihatsu also won the Japanese Touring Car Championship in 1987 and 1988. In the 1990s, Daihatsu continued to compete in a variety of motorsport categories.

The company also developed a number of new technologies, such as the K3-VET engine, which was one of the first turbocharged kei car engines. In the 2000s, Daihatsu focused on developing new racing platforms. The company developed the Mira e:S race car, which competes in the All-Japan Formula V series. Daihatsu also developed the DNGA platform, which is used in a number of its production cars, as well as in its racing cars.

Daihatsu is no longer involved in factory-backed racing, but the company’s cars continue to be popular with privateer racers. Daihatsu cars are also popular among grassroots racers, and there are many Daihatsu-powered race cars competing in various series around the world.
