Mazda Performance Racing, more popularly known as Mazdaspeed, wasn’t just a racing team in Japan. It was a legend. Starting in 1967 as a scrappy group under the name “Mazda Sports Corner,” they raced everything from rotary-powered Cosmo sports cars to prototypes. Their focus was on proving the potential of Mazda’s unconventional rotary engine on the world stage.
The 1980s saw Mazdaspeed become a force in endurance racing and then came 1991. In a historic victory, their revolutionary 787B race car, powered by a tiny rotary engine, took the checkered flag at the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans. This marked the first (and so far only) time a Japanese manufacturer won the prestigious race. Mazdaspeed continued racing for many years, racking up wins and developing high-performance Mazdas for the street. By the 2010s, the Mazdaspeed name faded, but its legacy lives on.
